தமிழ் கடவுளான முருகப்பெருமானுக்கு சிறப்புக்குரிய இடமாக தமிழகத்தில் ஆறு இடங்கள் உள்ளன. அவை ஆறு படைவீடுகளான திருப்பரங்குன்றம், திருச்செந்தூர், பழனி,சுவாமிமலை, பழமுதிர்சோலை ஆகியவை உள்ளன.

இந்த ஆறுபடை வீடுகளில் 5 மலைப்பகுதியிலும், திருச்செந்தூர் கோயில் மட்டும் கடற்கரையிலும் அமைந்துள்ளது தனிச்சிறப்பானது. திருச்செந்தூர் படையெடுத்து செல்லும் படை வீரர்கள் தங்கும் இடம் தான் படைவீடு. அதன்படி சூரபத்மன் வதம் செய்வதற்காக தளபதி வீரபாகு உள்ளிட்ட படைவீரர்கள் தங்கியிருந்த இடம் தான் திருச்செந்தூர் சுப்பிரமணிய சுவாமி கோயில்.
 
சூரபத்மன் என்ற அரக்கனை ஐப்பசி மாதம் வளர்பிறை சஷ்டியன்று தன் வைரவேல் கொண்டு வதை செய்த தினம் கந்த சஷ்டி விழா, சூரசம்ஹாரம் என விமர்சையாக கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது.
 
சூரபத்மனை வெற்றிகொண்டதால் இங்கே கோயில் கொண்ட முருகப்பெருமான் 'ஜெயந்திநாதர்' என்று விளிக்கப்பட்டதாகவும் அதுவே பின்னாளில் மருவி 'செந்தில்நாதர்' என்று மருவியதாம். அதுபோலவே இவ்வூரும் 'திருசெயந்திபுரம்' என்பதிலிருந்து திருச்செந்தூர் என்றானதாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
 
சிலப்பதிகார குறிப்புகள் படி இக்கோயில் 2000 ஆண்டுகள் பழமையானதாகச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது. அறுபடை வீடுகளில் மலைமீது அமைந்திராத கோயில் இது மட்டுமே. திருச்செந்தூர் கோயிலின் ராஜகோபுரம் ஒன்பது அடுக்குகளைக் கொண்டு 150 அடி உயரமுடையதாகும்.
 
முருகனின் இடது கையில் தாமரை மலர் மற்றும் ஜடாமுடியோடு சிவயோகி போல் காட்சியளிக்கிறார். முருகனின் பின் புறம் இடது சுவரில் முருகன் பூஜை செய்ததாக கூறப்படும் லிங்கம் ஒன்று உள்ளது. அதற்கு முதலில் பூஜை செய்த பின் முருகப்பெருமானுக்கு பூஜை செய்யப்படுகிறது.
